According to CNN, Chinese and Russian intelligence agencies are now actively recruiting dissatisfied U.S. federal employees in national security positions who have recently been let go or are facing termination.

This recruitment push by foreign adversaries comes in light of significant layoffs by the Office of Personnel Management, which could lead to former employees being more inclined to leak sensitive U.S. information.
The Trump administration has been working alongside the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to address issues of government inefficiency, fraud, and waste, which have contributed to these workforce reductions.
However, many of those who lost their jobs or fear losing them find themselves feeling “bitter about being fired.”
“Employees who believe they have been wronged by their employer have historically been more prone to disclose sensitive information,” said Holden Triplett, a former director of counterintelligence at the National Security Council during President Trump’s first term.
“We might be inadvertently crafting an ideal recruitment space for them,” he added.
The targeted effort appears to focus on employees holding security clearances, as they possess access to critical information pertaining to U.S. infrastructure.
Per CNN sources, at least two countries have set up recruitment websites tailored for disgruntled U.S. federal employees now willing to betray their government.
Foreign agents are said to be scouting potential recruits on social media platforms, including TikTok, Reddit, LinkedIn, and RedNote.
“It’s clear that these discarded federal employees, with extensive institutional knowledge, present enormously appealing targets to the intelligence agencies of our adversaries,” an unnamed source shared with CNN.
In contrast, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard suggested that this perceived security threat is merely a tactic employed by federal agents to protect their own positions.
“I’m curious about how they believe this is an effective strategy to retain their jobs,” Gabbard remarked on Tuesday. “They essentially expose themselves by issuing this indirect threat via their propaganda outlet through CNN, which they have repeatedly used to reveal their true loyalties—not to America or its citizens, but to themselves.”
“These are exactly the kind of individuals we need to identify and eliminate, so that the dedicated patriots in this sector can concentrate on our core mission,” she added.
