Rust Shooting Trial: Opening Statements Presented to Jury, Reports One America News Network

The jury in actor Alec Baldwin’s involuntary manslaughter trial has listened to opening statements.

On Wednesday, the trial began in New Mexico over the fatal shooting of a cinematographer on the set of the film Rust in 2021. Jurors will determine Baldwin’s criminal culpability in the case.
The prosecution argued that Baldwin broke cardinal gun safety rules, painting him as a reckless actor who played with the prop gun like a toy.
Meanwhile, the defense is trying to pull focus away from Baldwin onto the real bullet that was loaded into the gun, shifting blame to the already-convicted armorer who was on set.
“These cardinal rules, they’re not cardinal rules on a movie set,” defense attorney Alex Spiro said. “And I don’t have to tell you much more about this because you’ve all seen gunfights in movies. And the reason that can happen is because safety is ensured before the actor.”
The trial is expected to take eight days.
If Baldwin is convicted, he could face a year and a half in prison.
