According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the outbreak made 449 people fall ill across 31 states, with at least 125 patients requiring hospitalization. The most recent patient to develop the symptoms first reported feeling sick on June 4th.
Nevertheless, a number of vegetable and fruit growers have announced that they are no longer producing cucumbers, and other reports have claimed that the affected cucumbers have been removed from grocery stores and supermarkets.
The FDA has also claimed that Salmonella discovered in canal water used by Bedner Growers Inc. of Boynton Beach, Florida, is at least one culprit of the current Salmonella outbreak.
In an outbreak update from the FDA, it stated that Thomas Produce Co. and Bedner Growers Inc. supplied cucumbers to multiple points of service where sick people had reported eating cucumbers. This was based on collected traceback information.
The FDA discovered Salmonella in the soil at the growing locations in addition to the outbreak strain in the growers’ canal water. Other Salmonella strains that are unrelated to the outbreak were also discovered by the organization.
“Multiple other strains of Salmonella, unrelated to this outbreak investigation, found at Bedner Growers Inc. matched clinical isolates from illnesses in the National Center for Biotechnology Information’s (NCBI) database that occurred in previous years. CDC and FDA are working to determine whether other positive samples from Thomas Produce Company match historical clinical isolates,” according to the outbreak update.
The CDC noted that out of every confirmed patient, there were also 29 patients that went undetected by medical providers, as many individuals typically do not seek medical attention, while others are not specifically tested for Salmonella.
