San Francisco Garage Thief Takes Rep. Schiff’s Bags
Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., was on his way to a fancy dinner party in San Francisco when his luggage was stolen from his car in a parking garage, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.
Schiff had to attend the dinner in just a shirt and a hiking vest, while everyone else was dressed in suits. He stood up to express his gratitude to lawyer Joe Cotchett for his support in Schiff’s Senate bid to replace the late Dianne Feinstein, according to the newspaper.
“Yes, they took my bags,” Schiff later confirmed to the Chronicle. “But I’m here to thank Joe.”
Cotchett was impressed.
“Adam really impressed everyone tonight,” Cotchett said. “He will make a great senator – he is going to bring significant change to the Senate.”
Car break-ins have been a major issue in San Francisco in recent years, with a 30-day period last year recording 1,670 incidents, as reported by the New York Post.
However, crime data released this week showed a 35% decrease in larceny, the type of theft that includes car break-ins, in the first quarter of 2024, dropping from 8,389 to 5,402, according to the Chronicle.
Schiff informed Cotchett’s spokesperson Lee Houskeeper that he had been advised not to leave anything in the car, the Chronicle mentioned.
“Maybe he can go shopping with Willie Brown to find a new suit from one of the many high-quality clothing stores in San Francisco,” Houskeeper joked, referring to the former San Francisco mayor known for his fashion sense.
“I guess it’s a ‘Welcome to San Francisco’ moment,” Houskeeper added.
