Schiff (D-Calif.) informed the House on Friday that his departure from the lower chamber will take effect on Sunday, confirming to the Washington Examiner that he will take the oath of office on Monday. This announcement comes less than a month prior to the commencement of the 119th Congress on January 3, 2025.
The incoming senator expressed gratitude to his constituents in a video after casting his final vote on the House floor.
“I’m truly thankful for the feedback you’ve shared with me, the values you imparted, and the legislative ideas that made it possible for me to serve as your representative,” Schiff stated.
Moreover, Schiff mentioned that he has consulted with various Republican and Democratic senators in preparation for his transition to the upper chamber and is hopeful about the existing “real culture of finding common ground.”
As he concludes his 24-year tenure in the House, the outgoing congressman leaves behind a legacy as a prominent opponent of President-elect Donald Trump.
When Republicans regained control of the House, then-Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) removed Schiff from his Intelligence Committee role, citing allegations of misusing intelligence for political gain.
In June 2023, Republicans voted to censure the California Democrat, with McCarthy publicly admonishing Schiff for reportedly misleading the public during congressional inquiries into claims of Trump’s collusion with Russia.
Schiff spearheaded the previously debunked accusations of a Russia collusion conspiracy during the 2016 election period.
This year, Trump labeled Schiff as “an enemy from within,” leading to speculation that President Joe Biden might issue preemptive pardons for Schiff and others to shield them from potential legal repercussions from Trump.
The California congressman secured the nomination over Representative Katie Porter (D-Calif.) and Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) in the primary and subsequently won the 2024 election against Republican Steve Garvey, filling the vacancy left by the late Senator Dianne Feinstein.
