Schlapp Criticizes House GOP Majority for Ineffectiveness in Congress
According to Conservative Political Action Conference Chairman Matt Schlapp, House Republicans did not have a significant positive impact on Congress during the first session of the 118th Congress.
Schlapp’s annual Center for Legislative Accountability (CLA) report card of conservatives, published on Monday, highlighted that much of 2023 was “wasted on continuing resolutions.”
In the report, Schlapp noted that while the 2022 mid-terms were not ideal, Republicans had a narrow majority and were “freed from Speaker Nancy Pelosi.” Despite this, House Republicans did not capitalize on their opportunities and failed to make a significant positive impact on Congress.
Specifically, the report criticized the focus on Continuing Resolutions that maintained Speaker Pelosi’s spending policies and failed Congressional Review Act resolutions, which allowed the executive branch to maintain its authority.
The report also highlighted the grades of House Republicans, with 71 receiving awards for conservative excellence, including 15 with a perfect 100% score. Only Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, received a perfect score in the Senate.
A notable failure mentioned in the report was the House Republicans’ inability to elect Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, as Speaker to replace Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., in the fall.
On the Senate side, the lowest-scoring Republicans included House Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., 68%; and Sens. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, 59%; Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska., 55%; and Susan Collins, R-Maine, 54%.
