The United States Supreme Court has rejected President-elect Donald Trump’s bid to halt the sentencing in connection with his alleged “hush money” case in New York.

In a 5-4 decision on Thursday, the Supreme Court turned down Trump’s urgent request for a postponement of the sentencing proceedings.

Of the conservative justices, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, and Brett Kavanaugh voted in favor of Trump’s request. However, Amy Coney Barrett, who was appointed by Trump, opposed it alongside the justices nominated by Democrats. Earlier in January 2024, she had also supported the Biden administration regarding a border policy.

In a concise order, the justices provided two explanations for their ruling.

“Firstly, the alleged evidentiary breaches at president-elect Trump’s state-court trial can be resolved in the regular course of an appeal. Secondly, the impact of sentencing on the president-elect’s duties is relatively minor considering the trial court’s intention to impose a sentence of ‘unconditional discharge’ following a brief virtual hearing.”

Trump is scheduled for sentencing on Friday, just ten days before his inauguration on January 20th for a second term.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
