Secret Service Gears Up for Potential Arrest of Trump in NYC
Prosecutors in the criminal trial of former President Donald Trump in New York are seeking only a fine for violating a gag order. However, the Secret Service is preparing in case Judge Juan Merchan decides to jail him, as reported by ABC News.
The Secret Service, mandated to protect Trump by law, has started planning in case Merchan orders short-term confinement. A contempt hearing was held with Merchan reserving his decision. Prosecutors allege that Trump has breached the gag order by attacking witnesses, jurors, and others involved in the case, except for District Attorney Alvin Bragg. Trump has pleaded not guilty to falsifying business records related to a payment to Stormy Daniels.
Assistant Manhattan district attorney Chris Conroy stated, “We are not yet seeking an incarceratory penalty, but the defendant seems to be angling for that.” In a Truth Social post, Trump criticized the gag order as unconstitutional and claimed the trial is rigged.
While officials do not anticipate Trump being placed in a holding cell at the courthouse, they are preparing for contingencies. The Secret Service has not discussed plans in case of a conviction and prison sentence for Trump. The agency emphasized its role in providing protection for government leaders, former Presidents, and other designated individuals.
