Sen. Manchin Criticizes Biden’s EV Policy, Calling it ‘Made in China’

Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia has criticized the Biden administration’s new policy regarding which electric vehicles qualify for tax credits, accusing them of supporting vehicles “Made in China.”

The Biden administration announced changes to the provisions of the Inflation Reduction Act that restrict tax credit eligibility for vehicles with batteries containing materials from China, North Korea, Russia, or Iran, as reported by The Hill.

Manchin stated, “The Administration has shown they are willing to break the law in their efforts to quickly flood the market with electric vehicles under the consumer electric vehicle tax credit in the Inflation Reduction Act. This is outrageous and unlawful.”

According to The Hill, the rule includes a two-year exemption for minerals that are hard to trace and exist in small quantities, as well as extends the exemption to graphite, which can be a significant component of electric vehicle batteries and is often produced in China.

Manchin argued that the main goal of the Inflation Reduction Act was to incentivize American businesses to bring energy and manufacturing supply chains back to the United States and decrease reliance on foreign adversaries.

The administration’s pursuit of Chinese EV components is so intense that they are blatantly disregarding the law by implementing a bill they did not pass and ignoring Congress’s agreement, all at the expense of American workers and taxpayers,” Manchin emphasized.

The senator, who has decided not to run for re-election this year, believes that this new rule will increase the country’s debt and endanger energy independence and national security.

Manchin announced that he will lead a Congressional Review Act resolution of disapproval.

Earlier this week, Manchin expressed his intention to overturn the Biden administration’s final rule on permitting, as per The Hill.

Apart from deciding not to seek re-election, Manchin has also ruled out a third-party presidential run.
