Sen. Sinema Strategizes to Attract Arizona Republicans for Reelection

The team of Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, I-Ariz., charted a reelection plan that includes earning the support of up to 35% of the state’s Republicans, NBC News reported.

While Sinema hasn’t announced if she plans to run for reelection next, her political team created a two-page prospectus that details how the former Democrat can win in Arizona, NBC News reported Monday.

The document, labeled “Kyrsten’s Path to Victory,” claims Sinema can win reelection by attracting 10% to 20% of Democrats, 60% to 70% of independents, and 25% to 35% of Republicans, NBC News reported.

“If the parties nominate extremists, as expected, Kyrsten will win a majority of IND, at least a third of REP and a percentage of DEM voters — making her the first Independent to win a three-way statewide race in American history,” the document said in a section named “Kyrsten Will Win Arizona.”

Arizona Republicans are preparing for a potentially volatile primary featuring Kari Lake and Blake Masters, both former President Donald Trump-aligned candidates, and Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb.

Rep. Ruben Gallego is running for the Democratic Party’s nomination.

Republicans, at a 51-49 disadvantage in the Senate, are aiming to win control of the chamber next year. Arizona figures to be a key state in achieving that objective.

“Kyrsten has not announced or decided one way or another,” a Sinema spokesperson told NBC News about a potential run for reelection.

The spokesperson, though, said that Sinema has “been actively fundraising” and has “well over $10 million cash on hand.”

The document created by Sinema’s political team shows that Sinema will attract more votes from Arizona Republicans than Democrats, NBC News reported.

The document, under a section titled “Kyrsten Delivers for Arizona,” credits Sinema with legislative achievements such as the bipartisan infrastructure law, postal reform, codification of same-sex marriage, and a gun law that Congress passed last year, NBC News reported.

It also mentioned lower drug prices under President Joe Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, a law that Sinema cast a decisive vote for last year. She convinced Democrats to trim a provision to empower Medicare to negotiate drug prices.

Sinema left the Democratic Party and registered as an independent in December.

“Kyrsten Sinema has been a stalwart advocate for Joe Biden’s agenda by supporting his American Rescue Plan and his signature climate change bill, the Inflation Reduction Act,” National Republican Senatorial Committee spokesperson Tate Mitchell said in a statement, NBC News reported.

“If Sinema runs, we expect Arizona Democrats to support her in droves because of this unwavering commitment to Joe Biden’s most important policy priorities.”
