Sen. Sullivan Criticizes White House Blocking of Alaskan Resources as ‘Lawless’
The Biden administration’s decisions to hinder natural resource development in Alaska have been criticized by Alaska GOP Sen. Dan Sullivan, who referred to them as “national security suicide” on Sunday.
Sullivan stated, “It’s lawless. He [President Joe Biden] doesn’t have the authority to do it, and I could go into all the laws that support me on that. It’s, as I say, national security suicide.”
Sullivan also pointed out the administration’s refusal to sanction Iranian oil and gas but its willingness to sanction Alaska. He expressed concern over the numerous executive orders targeting Alaska that are detrimental to the state’s resources.
One such decision was the rejection of the Ambler Road project, which would have facilitated access to zinc and copper deposits in Alaska. Additionally, the Interior Department’s Bureau of Land Management removed millions of acres of Alaska’s National Petroleum Reserve, the U.S. Arctic Ocean, and federal waters from consideration for new oil and gas leasing.
Regarding the House vote to allocate funding to Ukraine, Sullivan voiced uncertainty about the longevity of the funding if former President Donald Trump is reelected. He criticized Biden’s foreign policy decisions, blaming them for the situation in Ukraine.
Sullivan also expressed support for the supplemental funds for Ukraine, emphasizing their importance for both the country’s war efforts and the U.S. industrial base.
