Sen. Warner Warns Newsmax: TikTok Threat Now More Severe
Senator Mark Warner of Virginia disclosed on Newsmax that TikTok is aggressively lobbying to block the ban of its app in the United States.
Warner stated, “TikTok spent $100 million on advertising and lobbying a year ago to prevent the ban, but the situation has only worsened since then.”
He highlighted the recent overwhelming House vote supporting the ban, citing concerns over national security threats posed by TikTok.
Warner, as the chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, expressed worries about Chinese company ByteDance, which owns TikTok, being required to hand over data to the Chinese government. He also raised concerns about TikTok’s algorithm being manipulated for propaganda purposes by the Chinese Communist Party.
Warner proposed transferring ownership of TikTok to a group of investors as a possible solution, emphasizing the need to remove it from adversarial control.
He noted that other countries, such as Canada, the U.K., and Australia, have taken steps to restrict TikTok, and stressed the importance of a legal process for ownership transfer.
Warner addressed China’s criticism of the House vote by pointing out the Chinese government’s limitations on social media platforms within China. He contrasted the content of the Chinese version of TikTok with that available outside China.
