President Donald Trump’s Cabinet nominee was approved on Tuesday with a significant 77-22 vote.
Duffy was anticipated to surpass the voting requirement comfortably. He was unanimously recommended by the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee with a 28-0 vote last week and received unanimous procedural support from the Senate floor on Monday evening.
Taking the helm of an agency comprising over 55,000 employees and a budget exceeding $100 billion, Duffy has his work cut out for him.
During his confirmation hearing earlier this month, he emphasized his commitment to enhancing highway safety and improving aviation standards.
Moreover, Duffy expressed intentions to address the shortage of air traffic controllers and to restore public confidence in Boeing, following several safety issues that arose in 2024.
He will also oversee the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
When questioned by Senator Ed Markey (D-Mass.) during the hearing, Duffy committed to allowing the NHTSA to “follow the evidence and operate objectively” in its investigation of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) software, which was recalled in October of the previous year.
“Yes, I assure this committee and you that I will let NHTSA conduct their investigation,” he told Markey. “I think I also noted that I haven’t met any of the key players involved in these areas.”
