Senate Republicans Pledge to Uphold Filibuster Tradition
According to a report from Punchbowl News, Senate Republicans are determined to uphold the filibuster, even if former President Donald Trump is reelected and they regain the majority.
While Trump pushed to eliminate the filibuster during his time in office, stating it hindered his agenda, Senators like James Lankford, R-Okla., have expressed support for keeping it. Lankford mentioned that Trump had urged him to dismantle the filibuster multiple times, but he believes in the importance of this American tradition that requires thorough discussions among legislators.
Senator Thom Tillis, R-N.C., went as far as to say he would resign from the Senate if the filibuster was eliminated, emphasizing the need for courage in defending this longstanding practice.
Despite speculation about potential changes, Senate Minority Whip John Thune and other Republican leaders, including Senators John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Rick Scott, R-Fla., have all voiced their commitment to preserving the filibuster.
Retiring Senator Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., who has previously blocked attempts from Democrats to weaken the filibuster, expressed confidence in the Republicans’ ability to maintain it, citing their past resolve in upholding this rule.
