Senator Ernst to Introduce Contraception Legislation Ahead of Test Vote

Senator Joni Ernst from Iowa is set to introduce a bill aimed at safeguarding access to over-the-counter birth control ahead of a Senate test vote on legislation protecting women’s access to contraception.

“Despite the scare tactics from the left, Republicans have viable solutions to support women and families, which are gaining traction,” stated Ernst in a press release.

The bill, known as the Allowing Greater Access to Safe and Effective Contraception Act, will “enhance over-the-counter contraception choices and promote transparency to ensure that government funds support families. I will continue to advocate for women’s access to safe and effective birth control while holding Democrats accountable for their radical agenda,” added Ernst.

The Democrats’ test vote on contraception access comes as the Senate has given up on bipartisan legislation before the election. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Democrats are focusing on issues they believe will help them win the presidency and retain Senate control in November.

A separate vote on ensuring nationwide access to in vitro fertilization could take place as early as next week. While neither bill is expected to pass the Senate, where a 60-vote majority is needed, let alone in the Republican-led House, Schumer emphasized that Democrats will prioritize reproductive freedoms for the benefit of the American people.

Senator Shelley Moore Capito from West Virginia criticized the Democrats’ “symbolic votes on extreme legislation” and expressed support for Ernst’s initiative to provide an easier path to safe birth control, especially in rural areas.

“By expanding over-the-counter contraception options and gaining insight into current federal funding for contraception, we can address any gaps in access and eliminate duplications or misallocations of resources,” noted Capito in a statement.

Senator Steve Daines from Montana denounced Schumer and Senate Democrats for misleading the public due to their lagging poll numbers by falsely claiming that Republicans oppose contraception.

“There isn’t a single Republican senator against access to contraception, and Senate Democrats should be ashamed of deceiving women and families for political gain. I endorse the sensible measures in Senator Ernst’s bill,” added Daines.
