Senator Lankford expresses dissatisfaction with the White House’s border deal offering
Sen. James Lankford is leading the Republican efforts to negotiate an agreement that links border security with Ukraine funding. He has expressed that President Joe Biden’s administration is not doing enough to address the growing numbers of migrants entering the country. Lankford made these comments during an appearance on CBS News’s “Face the Nation.”
Biden’s proposed $105 billion bill includes funding for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, as well as money for security at the U.S.-Mexico border. However, Senate Republicans are refusing to support the bill unless it includes significant changes in border policy to reduce the influx of migrants.
Lankford emphasized that the situation at the border is escalating, with record numbers of crossings occurring in recent months. He believes that the administration needs to take immediate action to prevent chaos and regain control over the border.
He also mentioned the need to manage asylum requests and prevent the exploitation of the system by cartels and smugglers, who are taking advantage of the backlog in processing asylum claims.
House Speaker Mike Johnson has stated that the House will not approve a supplemental package unless it includes H.R. 2, a bill passed by Republicans that addresses immigration law and employment eligibility for new workers.
Despite these disagreements, Lankford emphasized the urgency of finding a solution to the border crisis and highlighted the need for bipartisan cooperation to address the challenges at hand. He also clarified that reports indicating he is proposing a new expulsion authority, similar to the use of Title 42 during the Trump administration, are inaccurate.
