Senator Lankford Tells Newsmax: Border Bill is Nothing but a ‘Prop’ that is Doomed to Fail
The Senate Democrats’ attempt to bring back a bipartisan border bill that was previously defeated in February is merely a political maneuver, according to Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla. Lankford, who negotiated the original bill and voted in favor of it, told Newsmax that the upcoming vote on Thursday is likely to fail as well.
Lankford criticized the Democrats for using the vote as a political tool rather than a genuine effort to address border security, pointing out that the border remains porous with thousands of people entering the country each day.
He emphasized the need for a bipartisan approach to solving the border crisis, rather than engaging in political posturing and fundraising efforts. Lankford also expressed disappointment in the Democrats’ lack of communication with him about the vote, further underscoring the political nature of the move.
The senator highlighted the differences between the current bill and the original one, noting that the new version lacks key provisions that Democrats had initially sought, such as amnesty. He also pointed out that the bill now focuses solely on border security, which may result in more Democrats opposing it compared to the previous vote.
Lankford criticized President Joe Biden for trying to appease his progressive base at the expense of national security, particularly with regards to open borders. He argued that Biden’s alignment with the progressive left could alienate independent voters who prioritize border security.
