Senator Lankford tells Newsmax: Refusing Mayorkas Trial Sets ‘Terrible Precedent’
Senator James Lankford expressed concern over the possibility of the Democrat-controlled Senate refusing to hold a trial on the House’s articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Speaking on Newsmax, Lankford emphasized the importance of following through with the trial.
Despite this, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has indicated that he does not plan to hold a trial, according to Lankford. The Senator pointed out that historically, no impeachment has been tabled or dismissed, making this situation significant.
Lankford disagreed with Schumer’s characterization of the Mayorkas impeachment as a policy issue, stating that it is a legal matter based on violations of the law. He noted that unless two Democrats join Republicans in calling for the trial, it is unlikely to proceed.
Republicans, led by Lankford, remain focused on border security, even without an impeachment trial. Lankford stressed the importance of addressing the national security threat posed by illegal border crossings.
Additionally, Lankford discussed Israel’s response to drone and missile attacks, suggesting that Israel retaliate by targeting facilities producing drones and missiles in Iran. This, he believes, would send a clear message to Iran.
