Senator Manchin changes party affiliation to Independent due to ‘Partisan Extremism’

Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, a Democrat, announced on Friday that he has registered as an independent, sparking speculation about his future political endeavors.

Manchin, who was expected to face a tough reelection battle in November had he decided to run, has been a vocal critic of the Democratic Party and a hurdle to many of President Joe Biden’s legislative goals.

Having served in the Senate since 2010 and currently as the chair of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, Manchin expressed disappointment in the state of national politics, stating both major parties have prioritized partisan extremism over serving their constituents.

In his statement, Manchin highlighted the lack of compromise in today’s political landscape and his decision to register as an independent with no party affiliation in order to continue advocating for the sensible majority in America.

Despite his announcement, many questions remain unanswered, such as whether Manchin will continue to caucus with Democrats in the Senate and if he plans to seek higher office in the future.

Requests for further comment from Manchin’s office were not immediately addressed.

Earlier in February, Manchin stated he would not run for president, emphasizing his commitment to supporting a candidate who could unite the country.

This decision was part of a national listening tour announced by Manchin when he opted not to seek reelection for another Senate term.

The speech at West Virginia University underscored his desire to avoid disrupting the political landscape and instead work towards unity.
