Senator Manchin Tells Newsmax: D-Day Illustrates the Necessity of Vigilance
At the 80th-anniversary commemoration of the D-Day invasion in Normandy, France, Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., praised President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron for their speeches, emphasizing the absence of politics. In an interview with Newsmax’s John Huddy, Manchin emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant.
“They were both focused and on point,” said Manchin, who recently announced his switch from the Democratic Party to become an independent. “It was all about serving our country, honoring the sacrifices that have been made.”
Biden’s remarks on the need to avoid isolationism resonated with Manchin.
“The world depends on us,” he said. “Isolationism is not the path to becoming a global superpower, so I prefer not to view it through a political lens. I believe in bringing Democrats and Republicans together to tackle our nation’s challenges.”
Manchin expressed his commitment to uniting the country to maintain its status as a global superpower, asserting that he does not intend to run for political office once his current term as senator ends. Despite his party switch, he maintained that he has always voted independently based on his beliefs and commitment to his constituents, state, and country.
Calling for mature dialogue and understanding between supporters of Biden and former President Donald Trump, Manchin highlighted the need to move past divisive name-calling and finger-pointing. He also reflected on the emotional moments of the ceremony in Normandy, particularly Macron’s gesture of presenting the Napoleon Bonapart Award to U.S. veterans and embracing them individually.
Walking through the historic Normandy countryside, Manchin reflected on the sacrifices made by the troops 80 years ago and underscored the importance of remembering the events that unfolded. He commended the unwavering dedication and lack of complaints from the surviving veterans, emphasizing the significance of the war in liberating people from tyranny.
