Senator Romney Mocks ‘America First,’ Criticizes Isolationists

Retiring Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, criticized the phrase “America First,” finding it disorienting due to its promotion of isolationist policies.

Romney expressed his concerns about the increasing isolationism within the Republican Party, particularly the phrase popularized by Donald Trump.

In an interview (starting at the 8:50 mark) with MSNBC on Wednesday, Romney said, “It’s unimaginable that in the party of Ronald Reagan, George Herbert Walker Bush, George W. Bush, John McCain, and others, we would see a growing isolationism within our party.”

Romney emphasized the importance of being connected to the world, stating, “Our economy is connected to the rest of the world, and it’s vital for us to be involved globally.”

He further commented on the implications of isolationist policies, pointing out the risks of conflicts if bad actors are left unchecked.

Regarding Trump’s criticism of him, Romney stated that he won’t be voting for Trump or President Joe Biden in November.

Romney highlighted the need for a world where nations follow established orders for global security and prosperity.
