Senator Romney open to voting alongside Democrats on Mayorkas decision

Senator Mitt Romney from Utah stated that he would be willing to vote alongside Democrats to dismiss the impeachment articles against Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. However, he emphasized the importance of having a debate to address the charges that Mayorkas deliberately avoided enforcing immigration laws, as reported by Axios.

Romney expressed his views to reporters, saying, “I don’t believe there’s a constitutional standard met. But at the same time, I think the Senate should give a chance for debate, even if it’s limited to two hours. So, if there’s a motion just to table without any discussion, that’s something I would oppose. If there’s a provision that allows debate, it’s something I’d be open to.”

The House recently sent two articles of impeachment against Mayorkas to the Democratic-controlled Senate, where it is expected to be dismissed swiftly.

A two-thirds majority of the Senate is required to convict and remove Mayorkas from office.

If an impeachment trial were to proceed in the Senate, it would mark the third time in five years. Democrats previously impeached President Donald Trump twice for his interactions with Ukraine and in response to the January 6, 2021 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Trump was acquitted on both occasions.
