Senator Sullivan emphasizes the importance of US support for Taiwan in face of escalating tensions with China, in conversation with Newsmax
Sen. Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska, highlighted the U.S. commitment to supporting Taiwan in case of Chinese military aggression during an interview with Newsmax on Wednesday.
Sullivan emphasized the obligations under the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, stating, “The Taiwan Relations Act, passed in 1979, mandates that the United States assist Taiwan in defending itself, provide weapons, training, and maintain the capacity to aid Taiwan’s defense.”
Sullivan expressed concerns about the reduction in U.S. naval power under the Biden administration, particularly in the face of China’s expanding naval capabilities.
Recent bipartisan visits to Taiwan by U.S. lawmakers aimed to show support for Taiwan’s democracy. This visit marked the first delegation since the inauguration of Taiwan’s new president amidst large Chinese military exercises, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.
Sullivan, on “The Record With Greta Van Susteren,” stressed the importance of a strong U.S. naval presence in the Taiwan Strait.
He emphasized the need for a robust naval force in the region and pledged to advocate for this in the upcoming defense bill.
China’s response to Taiwan’s political developments has been aggressive, with large-scale military drills conducted around the island as punishment for what they view as separatist actions.
