ABC News confirmed that there is currently a heightened state of alert in place at several U.S. military bases located throughout Europe.

According to two U.S. official sources who spoke with the outlet, the alert level of Force Protection Condition (FPCON) “Charlie” was implemented over the past weekend.

“Charlie” is the second-highest alert level, according to the U.S. Army, and it “applies when an incident occurs or intelligence is received indicating some form of terrorist action or targeting against personnel or facilities is likely.”

U.S. European Command (EUCOM) said in a statement to reporters that it is “constantly assessing a variety of factors” on both security and safety.

“For operational security reasons, we will not get into specific measures, but we remain vigilant,” EUCOM stated.

While maintaining that the military has likely faced a “active-reliable threat,” a U.S. official stationed at one undisclosed base in Europe told CNN that they have not seen the alert level raised to Charlie “in at least 10 years.”

“We are preparing ourselves for all conceivable dangers: from Islamists terror to violent criminals and hooligans,” German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said.

The development was initially reported by Stars and Stripes, an independent military journal.
