Shen Yun Takes You Beyond the Physical World, Says New York Theatergoer
NEW YORK—Realtor Sheriff Iguaran hopped on a plane from Florida to New York just to catch Shen Yun’s evening performance at the Lincoln Center on April 13.
Over the years, Mr. Iguaran saw countless Shen Yun advertisements and silently promised himself to attend. Yet, year after year, he never got the chance. This year, after missing Shen Yun’s visit to St. Petersburg, Fla. yet again, he called up his nephew and made plans to finally see it in New York City.
Mr. Iguaran was not disappointed and thought the performance was definitely worth the trip.
“I flew specially to see the show. Very, very professional. Very nice, very spiritual, very sweet—the whole performance—I was very impressed. I liked it a lot,” he said.
“For me, it was a bit beyond [just professionalism]—I see the heart and the spirit and the soul of this performance. It was not just a show, it was a bit more.”
Based in New York, Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company. The artists’ mission is to bring back China’s 5,000 years of divinely-inspired culture that had been destroyed by decades of communist rule.
Prior to the regime’s spread of atheism, the teachings of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Daoism were indelible parts of Chinese life. Shen Yun’s goal is to revive this traditional culture and share with everyone the beauty of China before communism.
A very spiritual man himself, Mr. Iguaran absolutely loved Shen Yun’s program depicting the heavens. He thought it was spectacular and extremely impressive.
“There were parts of the show that took you beyond the physical—that was one of the most important things—it was beyond what regular people see. It goes deeper and farther,” he added.
Shen Yun’s performance is comprised of a series of short pieces that takes its audience through the dynasties and across the vast regions of China.
Using classical Chinese, folk, and ethnic dances, as well as solo musical performances, Shen Yun recounts legends and tales from ancient times to the modern day.
Mr. Iguaran also really enjoyed the erhu solo—an ancient two-stringed instrument. He said the music brought him “very close” to the artists and to traditional Chinese culture.
“It was interesting to see—the woman playing the two-stringed instrument—she was very sweet,” he expressed. “There was an extremely bright light [around her.] A person with so much talent—you have to have a [good] soul to have that.”
