Shirley and Clark Stress Importance of Trump-Biden Debates on Newsmax

Presidential historian Craig Shirley highlighted the significance of the upcoming debates between former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden on Newsmax Wednesday, emphasizing their historical impact on election outcomes.

Shirley, known for his work on President Ronald Reagan, discussed the crucial role debates have played in shaping past elections while appearing on “American Agenda.”

He stated, “Debates are vitally important. They’ll be just as important as they have been in the past.”

Shirley referenced historical moments where debates influenced election results, such as John F. Kennedy’s victory after the Richard Nixon debate and Ronald Reagan’s memorable “Are you better off than you were four years ago?” against Jimmy Carter, leading to Reagan’s win one week later.

Clark Judge, founder of the White House Writers Group, expressed concerns about Biden’s performance, noting his recent struggles with scripted delivery. “He won’t be speaking off the cuff; he’ll be heavily rehearsed, but he’s facing challenges given his recent performances,” Judge mentioned.

Despite potential advantages in the debate setup, Shirley expects Trump to take an aggressive stance, which could significantly impact the debate dynamics. He believes Trump has ample material to challenge Biden’s record, setting the stage for a potentially intense exchange.

“I think Donald Trump’s gonna be on the attack the whole time, and because there’s so much of Biden’s record to scrutinize, from the border to inflation to the wars, there’s a lot of material for Trump to use,” he explained.

The agreement for debates comes after months of uncertainty, with both candidates swiftly agreeing to engagements tentatively scheduled for June 27 and September 10, as reported by Politico. Trump’s campaign accepted CNN and ABC invitations, while Biden agreed to both forums.

However, criticism arose for excluding independent or third-party candidates like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. from participating in the debates. Kennedy expressed disappointment with this exclusion, arguing that it limits the diversity of perspectives and undermines the democratic process.

In a post on X, Kennedy highlighted that Biden and Trump are excluding him from the debate, which he believes undermines democracy.
