Saturday Night Live (SNL) is receiving backlash for making “tasteless” jokes regarding the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

The show faced criticism following a nearly 90-second segment addressing the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, which included commentary on America’s peculiar interest in the appearance of the alleged shooter.
“The search continues for the individual responsible for the murder of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO, and it highlights something about America that a man was killed in cold blood and the main reactions were, ‘Yeah, well, healthcare is terrible!’ and also, ‘Girl, that shooter is attractive,’” co-host Colin Jost joked.
“According to New York City police, they managed to acquire a cheerful photo of the suspect after he was filmed at a nearby hostel, charming a female staff member identified as ‘Lucky S. Bechalive,’” co-host Michael Che added humorously.
Jost did not shy away from criticizing officials, especially the NYPD.
“This week, New York City leaders sent a stern warning regarding crime: ‘If you shoot someone in broad daylight, you better pedal away, hop on a bus, and get out of here, mister,’” he remarked.
“It’s shocking that this shooting took place just three blocks away in broad daylight, and the individual simply rode off on a bicycle. Probably because every officer in the city is busy guarding our Christmas tree,” Jost noted, referencing the Rockefeller Plaza Christmas Tree Lighting that occurred the same day.
“The NYPD now believes the suspect departed the city on a bus from Port Authority. Thanks, but a Port Authority passenger who resembles a murderer complicates the search,” Jost concluded with humor. While some viewers found the segment entertaining, others appreciated the Port Authority quip.
Many took to social media to voice their displeasure with the jokes, expressing concern for Thompson’s family during their time of grief.
“Disgraceful. I couldn’t bear to watch this segment. The family and friends of the victim are deeply mourning right now,” one user commented beneath a YouTube video of the segment.
“Absolutely agree. I don’t typically watch SNL, but given this segment and the supportive comments, I can say I won’t be watching it again. Joking about someone’s murder is utterly revolting… a family is grieving at this moment,” another responded.
Brian Thompson, 50, was attacked and killed while walking from his midtown hotel to the company’s annual investor conference at the nearby Hilton Hotel.
