Speaker Johnson: Act Guarantees Only US Citizens Participate in Elections

House Speaker Mike Johnson, along with Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, and Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, have introduced a new bill that aims to ensure only U.S. citizens can vote in U.S. elections by requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote.

“Currently, it is a federal crime for noncitizens to vote in elections, but there is no mechanism in place to ensure that only citizens are registering and voting,” Johnson stated during the announcement of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act at the Capitol.

Johnson expressed concerns about the influx of illegal immigrants welcomed by President Joe Biden and the growing number of noncitizens voting in municipal elections. He emphasized the need to prevent non-citizens from voting.

During his travels across the country, Johnson has observed a deep concern among Americans about election security, regardless of political affiliation. With the open border policies of the Biden administration, Johnson warned that illegal immigrants could potentially influence election outcomes if allowed to vote.

Johnson highlighted the number of immigrants who have entered the country since Biden took office, including those on humanitarian parole who could register to vote. He also pointed out the potential risks of individuals on student visas engaging in voter fraud.

Advocates for the legislation joined Johnson at the event, including representatives from various organizations supporting election integrity and transparency.
