On Sunday, Speaker Mike Johnson announced his intention to push forward the “one big bill” approach to execute President Donald Trump’s tax cuts alongside funding for border security.

Johnson’s (R-La.) remarks were made in light of Senate Republicans unveiling a budget strategy capped at $340 billion. He noted that it will take time to achieve agreement within the party’s slim majority in the House.
“I regularly discuss this with the president and his team, assuring them that we will accomplish our goals, but it must be through the one big bill strategy,” Johnson remarked. “This approach maximizes our chances of success in fulfilling all these campaign commitments.”
Johnson continued, indicating that while the House Budget Committee was set to evaluate the budget resolution next week, “it may be delayed slightly because the specifics are crucial.”
“I need to remind you that I am working with the smallest margin in history, currently just a two-vote span, so I must ensure that everyone is on board before we proceed with the final product. There are still a few more criteria to meet, but we are nearing completion.”
Currently, House Republicans hold a slim lead of 218-215, making it vital for all Republicans to remain united to avoid jeopardizing the bill.
This past Friday, Senate Budget Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham put forth a proposal for an additional $85.5 billion over four years dedicated to border security and deportations.
“Lindsey is a good friend, and I hold him in high regard. I understand the initiatives they are pursuing. They aim to advance the agenda, and we share that objective,” Johnson expressed. “President Trump received a mandate to bring forth the America First agenda, and he’s moving swiftly … we will legislate that,” Johnson added.
Moreover, Johnson disclosed that Republican lawmakers are actively investigating ways to counterbalance Trump’s tax cuts while striving for a balanced budget and avoiding increases to the federal deficit.
“We will ensure that we identify responsible offsets for this initiative,” Johnson concluded.
