Special Counsel Acquires Trump’s Direct Messages and Drafted Tweets



Special counsel Jack Smith’s team has gained access to former President Donald Trump’s draft tweets and direct messages on Twitter, despite Twitter’s resistance. The content of the messages and the authors remain unknown. The dispute between prosecutors and Twitter revolved around whether Trump should be notified and concerns about executive privilege. U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell held Twitter in contempt for not complying with the search warrant and fined the company. The court documents revealed the specific categories of data sought from Trump’s account. Twitter shut down Trump’s account after the Capitol attack in January 2021. Trump criticized the Department of Justice for secretly targeting his Twitter account.
