A spokesperson reported that McConnell (R-Ky.) tripped after the meeting and soon needed medical evaluation.

“He sustained a minor cut to the face and sprained his wrist. He has been cleared to return to his schedule,” the aide stated.

McConnell was later spotted at the U.S. Capitol with a brace on one wrist and a bandage on his face. When asked by reporters about his condition, he replied: “Good.”

Earlier in the day, the Kentucky Republican was seen walking back to his Capitol office alongside a medical team and being escorted by Senate Republican Conference Chair John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), who had hosted the lunch meeting.

Senate Whip John Thune (R-S.D.), who took over the GOP leadership press conference in McConnell’s absence, confirmed that the 82-year-old appeared to be in stable condition following his fall.

“He is fine. He is in his office,” Thune mentioned, directing further questions to McConnell’s staff.

Senate Republican Conference Chair John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) informed colleagues that McConnell had fallen shortly after the lunch, just before his scheduled weekly press conference.

Witnesses reported seeing several of McConnell’s staff rush from his office towards the luncheon area immediately following the incident. A medical team with a wheelchair was also seen accompanying McConnell back to his office.

A representative for McConnell later confirmed that he was in his office and feeling much better.
