State Representative Lord: New Mexico’s Gun Laws are Making the Land of Enchantment Less Enchanting

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, D-N.M., and her Democratic Party allies in the New Mexico General Assembly are moving quickly to restrict our constitutional rights, specifically targeting the Second Amendment.

Lujan Grisham is leading the charge on over 20 anti-gun bills, including a radical proposal that would make all firearms illegal unless they are registered or modified with bolted-in magazines under ten rounds.

Other extreme measures include a 14-day waiting period with a gun database accessible to law enforcement, raising the age to twenty-one to purchase or possess any firearm, and holding gun manufacturers and stores personally liable for the actions of others.

New Mexico Democrats are not hiding their goal of abolishing the Second Amendment and confiscating firearms.

Meanwhile, sensible legislation that safeguards New Mexicans without infringing on our rights will likely be ignored or sidelined by Democrats.

One bill, for example, would have provided gun owners with a $1000 tax credit for purchasing gun safes to keep firearms away from children.

Instead of enacting common-sense measures that respect our constitutional rights, New Mexico Democrats are setting a dangerous example for Democrats nationwide.

Just last year, our governor attempted to violate the rights of legal gun owners by using an emergency health order to ban guns in Albuquerque.

When asked about her abuse of power, Governor Lujan Grisham stated, “No constitutional right, in my view, including my oath, is intended to be absolute.”

Elected officials are sworn to defend the Constitution of New Mexico and the United States, yet this governor has repeatedly shown a disregard for her oath to the people.

She was elected to govern, not dictate.

New Mexicans deserve representatives who uphold our constitution, not work against it.

We must defend our rights from the overreach of this governor.
