Republican Senator Lindsey Graham expressed on Sunday that discontinuing aid to Ukraine would be “even worse than Afghanistan.”

“The objective is to conclude the conflict with honor and fairness. Zelensky mishandled things at the White House. We’ve been pursuing this minerals agreement for an extensive period, but here we are. I’m concerned about halting intelligence and munitions to Ukraine while the conflict continues. If we cut off support to Ukraine, it would be more disastrous than Afghanistan,” Graham remarked.
“I don’t believe President Trump intends to do that, but until we reach a ceasefire, I would continue to provide Ukraine with what they need in terms of intelligence and weaponry for their defense,” he added.
Graham’s (R-S.C.) remarks come after President Donald Trump announced a suspension of aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine to encourage a peace agreement.
His comments regarding Afghanistan were aimed at the Biden administration’s chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021, which resulted in the deaths of 13 servicemen and injuries to another 45, alongside the deaths of 170 Afghan civilians.
“Regarding Russia, I will be proposing sanctions targeting their banking and energy sectors next week, pushing for them to engage in discussions,” Graham remarked. “If they refuse to take part in ceasefire and peace talks with the administration, we should aggressively sanction them.”
The call for sanctions follows President Donald Trump’s warning on Friday that he would impose sanctions and tariffs on Russia until a peace agreement is reached.
“Given that Russia is currently ‘pounding’ Ukraine on the frontlines, I am seriously contemplating extensive Banking Sanctions, Sanctions, and Tariffs on Russia until a Ceasefire and FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ON PEACE is achieved. To both Russia and Ukraine, I urge you to negotiate now, before it becomes too late. Thank you!!!” Trump posted on Truth Social.
Efforts for peace negotiations have faced challenges following Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to the White House on February 28th, which ended in a heated exchange between Zelensky and Trump.
Trump accused Zelensky of “risking World War III” and criticized his decisions as “very disrespectful to the country that has supported you more than many believe is warranted.”
The meeting was intended to conclude with an agreement regarding rare earth minerals, with the U.S. receiving Ukraine’s resources in exchange for strengthened protection of Ukraine’s interests.
“We’re aiming to integrate our economies. We want to ensure Ukraine brings value to the American economy – a mutually beneficial scenario,” Graham stated.
Following the altercation with Trump, Zelensky expressed his regret over the outcome of their meeting.
“It is essential to rectify things. We aspire for future collaboration and communication to be productive,” Zelensky remarked, noting his readiness to collaborate under President Trump’s “strong leadership” in pursuit of a peace agreement.
Zelensky provided a recent update on Friday, sharing: “We are continuing to work with partners who desire peace as we do, concentrating on the required actions. Next week, we will have extensive discussions here in Europe, with the U.S., and in Saudi Arabia – preparing for a meeting to expedite peace and fortify security foundations.”
“Today, we are engaged in significant discussions with President Trump’s team across various levels – with numerous calls. The goal is clear – peace as quickly as possible, security as reliably as possible. Ukraine is fully dedicated to a constructive approach,” Zelensky added.
