President-Elect Donald Trump has urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to engage in negotiations to resolve the Ukraine conflict, using the demise of Russia’s ally, Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria, as evidence of Russia’s “weakened state.”

“Assad is no longer in power. He has abandoned his country. His ally, Russia, as led by Vladimir Putin, showed no interest in his protection. There was never a valid reason for Russia to intervene there. They lost all motivation in Syria due to the situation in Ukraine, where close to 600,000 Russian soldiers are either wounded or deceased, in a conflict that should never have commenced and could continue indefinitely,” Trump remarked in a post on Truth Social.
The remarks from the incoming 47th president come in light of Syrian rebels storming into Damascus and overthrowing Assad’s regime, which had received Russian support for more than ten years.
In the aftermath of the regime change, Assad reportedly fled to Moscow, according to Russian state news.
“Assad and his family have reached Moscow. Russia has offered them asylum on humanitarian grounds,” stated a source from the Kremlin.
Trump has centered his campaign on ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and the latest developments in Syria suggest a potential decline in Russia’s global political influence as the war in Ukraine approaches its three-year mark, creating a chance for a possible ceasefire.
“Russia and Iran find themselves in a diminished state currently, one hindered by the Ukraine conflict and a failing economy, the other due to Israel’s military successes. Simultaneously, Zelensky and Ukraine are also interested in a resolution to this chaos. They have tragically lost around 400,000 soldiers, along with countless civilians,” Trump continued.
In the meantime, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appears to be more amenable to the idea of negotiations with Russia in light of Trump’s significant win.
Zelensky recently expressed his readiness to negotiate an end to the conflict on the condition of receiving security assurances, including membership in NATO, and diplomatically regaining territories lost to Russia during the war.
Nevertheless, Moscow remains dubious about the West’s ability to negotiate sincerely, asserting that Russia seeks a “complete and final resolution to the conflict,” rather than just a “temporary pause that allows the Kiev regime to recover, regroup, and re-arm.”
Nonetheless, Trump emphasized that there should be an “immediate ceasefire” and that negotiations ought to commence. “Too many lives are being lost unnecessarily, too many families shattered, and prolonged conflict could escalate into something much larger and more disastrous. I know Vladimir well. This is his moment to make a move. China can assist. The world is watching!”
Additionally, Trump has urged the Biden administration to refrain from involvement in the Syrian conflict.
“Syria is chaotic and not a friend of ours, & THE UNITED STATES SHOULD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. THIS IS NOT OUR FIGHT. LET IT UNFOLD NATURALLY. DO NOT INTERFERE!” Trump stated.
