On Monday, the shooter, identified as 15-year-old Natalie Rupnow, unleashed gunfire in the Christian school in Madison, Wisconsin, resulting in the death of a substitute teacher and a student, along with injuring at least five others, before taking her own life.
Authorities have yet to publicly name the victims or disclose a potential motive, nor have they released details about the shooter’s rumored manifesto.
At the time of the incident, the substitute teacher was overseeing a study hall session when Rupnow began her attack.
“The teacher perished while protecting the class. Many more lives could have been taken. She [Rupnow] discharged multiple rounds,” stated Lyndsay O’Connor, whose children are students at the school.
O’Connor described Rupnow as someone “who kept to herself,” often seen in “a collared shirt with a tie, jeans, and combat boots.” She added that Rupnow was not very social and often felt “very isolated.”
It was reported that Rupnow mentioned to another teacher her need to visit the nurse’s office shortly before the shooting began—though O’Connor noted it is unclear whether this visit actually occurred.
