The game is now set to take place on Thursday, January 2nd, after an individual drove a truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans shortly after 3 a.m. on New Year’s Day while discharging rounds into the crowd.
New Orleans police officers managed to fatally shoot the suspect, revealing that the individual was bearing an ISIS flag during the assault, and explosive devices were discovered at the scene.
The quarter-final College Football Playoff game featuring Georgia versus Notre Dame, scheduled to occur at the Caesars Superdome, was initially set for Wednesday, January 1st. However, authorities decided to postpone it as the attack transpired approximately ten blocks from the stadium.
“The Sugar Bowl Committee is shattered by the tragic events from early this morning,” declared Sugar Bowl Committee CEO Jeff Hundley in a statement on Wednesday.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. We are actively engaging with local, state, and federal authorities and will provide further updates as more information becomes available,” he continued.
In the meantime, the Georgia football team has been placed in a shelter-in-place order, according to ESPN’s Laura Rutledge, while Notre Dame confirmed that all team personnel are accounted for.
The 70,000-capacity stadium has been locked down for safety checks in light of the terrorist attack.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry sought to allay public concern ahead of the game, assuring that the Superdome and its vicinity are “safe,” amid increased law enforcement presence.
Additionally, authorities identified the deceased suspect as 42-year-old Shamsud Din Jabbar, an American from Texas. Officials noted they are still searching for other explosive devices in the vicinity and do not believe Jabbar acted independently in this deadly attack.
