Survey Finds Majority of North Carolina Voters Believe the United States is Heading in the Wrong Direction

According to a poll from High Point University released Monday, most North Carolina voters believe that the United States is “off track” entering the 2024 presidential election.

Survey results:

• 73% agree that “things have gotten pretty seriously off track.”
• 21% agree that “things in this country are generally going in the right direction.”
• 7% are unsure.

“As the 2024 election year begins, voters are closely divided on their preferences for elected offices in North Carolina,” said Martin Kifer, who chairs the school’s Department of Political Science and is director of the High Point poll, in a statement. “Registered voters are telling us that some of the same issues are most important this year as last, with inflation, national security and school safety at the top of the list.”

In 2020, former President Donald Trump, the current front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, won North Carolina over President Joe Biden by a slim majority of less than 100,000 votes. Democrats have targeted the state for this year’s elections.

High Point University polled 1,042 North Carolina voters Jan. 16-26, with a margin of error of 3.3 percentage points.
