According to reports, Deobra Redden has been sentenced to serve “between 26 and 65 years” in a Nevada correctional facility for the assault on 62-year-old Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus on January 3rd.

In September, Redden entered a plea of “guilty but mentally ill” to charges, including attempted murder, following a declaration from the judge that she feared for her life as he jumped over the bench to attack her.

“The guilty but mentally ill (GBMI)” verdict allows the jury to return a verdict that is neither fully responsible nor completely exonerated by insanity claims,” as explained by the DOJ.

The incident occurred just as Holthus was about to announce Redden’s sentence in a prior battery case.

Video from the courtroom captured the moment Redden vaulted over the bench in an apparent assault, resulting in minor injuries to Holthus, who did not require hospitalization, thanks to the swift intervention of bystanders.

Defense attorney Carl Arnold reported that Redden was not adhering to his prescribed treatment for schizophrenia at the time of the incident.

Arnold further noted that Redden’s guilty plea in September represents a careful consideration of the need to take responsibility for the regrettable event, while also acknowledging the effects of his untreated mental health issues at that time.

In court on Tuesday, Redden asserted that he had no intent to kill Judge Holthus, as reported by KLAS-TV. He stated he experienced visual disturbances, seeing “all red,” and was hallucinating during the act.
