On the evening of April 2nd, during a track meet in Frisco, Texas, Austin Metcalf, a junior at Memorial High School, was fatally stabbed by 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony, a senior at Centennial High School, after Metcalf pointed out that Anthony was sitting in the wrong seat and area reserved for his school under the tent.
The incident unfolded at Kuykendall Stadium amidst a track and field event featuring multiple local schools.
In a heartbreaking turn of events, Metcalf succumbed to his injuries in the arms of his twin brother, Hunter Metcalf. According to The New York Post, Hunter recounted that Austin had been stabbed “in the heart” by Anthony.
It is notable that the two had never interacted prior to this violent encounter.
“I tried to react quickly, but I didn’t see the actual stabbing,” he shared with WFAA. “It was completely senseless. I can’t comprehend why someone would go that far over such a minor disagreement.”
A witness at the scene described how Anthony opened his bag, pulled out a knife, and threateningly warned Metcalf, “Touch me and see what happens.”
“Austin touched Anthony to ask him to move, and that’s when Anthony pulled out … a black knife and stabbed Austin once in the chest,” the witness recounted.
Gavin Stites, a teammate and friend of Metcalf’s since childhood, spoke to reporters, describing Metcalf as someone he could always count on for support.
“I’d call him a brother… I’ve known him since I was five. If I needed anything, he was always there for me,” Stites stated.
Austin Metcalf was also remembered fondly by his mother, Megan, as the “most amazing kid.”
“He was filled with aspirations and determination that are rare in kids,” she said. “He had such a wonderful spirit, and he was beloved by so many.”
In the wake of this tragedy, Metcalf’s father, Jeff, established a GoFundMe page to cover funeral expenses and assist “his family in healing.” He expressed that their family relies on their faith in God and engages in prayer and devotion to cope with the immense loss of their son.
“I lean heavily on my faith to help me through this difficult time,” Jeff Metcalf shared.
Just two days before the incident, Austin had posted on X, stating: “Faith that God got me and my work will pay off.”
Now facing murder charges is 17-year-old Anthony. When apprehended by police after the stabbing, he reportedly stated: “I’m not alleged, I did it.”
He is currently held on a $1 million bond. If found guilty, he could face a prison sentence ranging from 5 to 99 years. There is speculation that he may be tried as an adult, though it has yet to be confirmed.
In Texas, a conviction for first-degree felony can result in a prison sentence of 5 to 99 years, or even life, and potentially a fine of up to $10,000, according to Texas Statutes.
