Tennessee State Representative Tells Newsmax: Willing to Do ‘Anything’ to Empower Teachers to Protect Students
Tennessee GOP state Rep. Jody Barrett expressed his support for legislation to arm licensed teachers in classrooms during an interview with Newsmax on Friday. Barrett stated that he is in favor of any measures that allow teachers to defend their students.
Representing a rural district in Tennessee, Barrett highlighted the challenges faced in his community. With limited law enforcement presence and response times, he emphasized the importance of empowering teachers to act as first responders in the event of an active shooter situation.
The Tennessee House Republicans recently passed a bill that would allow some teachers and staff to carry concealed handguns on public school campuses. The bill now awaits consideration by Republican Gov. Bill Lee.
In addition to this legislation, the Tennessee Legislature also introduced a bill aimed at preventing adults from assisting minors in obtaining gender-altering surgical procedures without parental consent.
Barrett expressed confidence in Gov. Lee’s support for these measures, citing the governor’s commitment to protecting children in Tennessee.
