The recent discovery that GOP Texas Representative Kay Granger had remained out of the public eye for nearly six months before it was revealed that she was residing at an independent care facility has made waves in political discussions over the weekend.

Despite the House being in recess from August to October, the long-serving lawmaker, who has represented Texas’ 12th District since 1997, has not participated in a vote since July. This has caused frustration among those who feel her staff has not been forthcoming regarding her health status.
Granger’s family and aides have denied speculation suggesting that the 81-year-old representative is living in the facility’s memory care unit, yet they confirmed that she resides in an independent living facility. They further noted that she has started to show symptoms of dementia since her move.
Her son, Brandon Granger, stated that over the three-month period since her relocation, she has exhibited rapid signs of dementia.
He insisted that his mother made the choice to move into the community voluntarily, claiming that speculation regarding her being placed in a memory care facility due to “losing her mind” is “a load of bulls–t.”
“They have a memory care facility there, but she’s in [an] independent living facility. It’s a nice condo. I helped her move in,” Brandon Granger told The Post.
The decline in her health has been “very rapid and very difficult,” her son reiterated.
However, The Dallas Express reported earlier that Kay Granger had been absent for an extended duration and was indeed in a memory care facility, raising concerns about her whereabouts. The article cited two individuals who claimed to be staff members that “confirmed” Granger’s residency and included a social media post from a user linked to Fort Worth, Texas.
Furthermore, another source who spoke to the press stated that any assertions about the Republican Congresswoman residing in a “memory care” unit are “categorically false.” This individual is not connected to Granger.
“In July, as she began to make preparations for retirement, she opted to downsize and move into this [new residence],” the source noted. “Had she anticipated being unable to vote for the last few weeks of the session, she would have made different arrangements.”
“With most illnesses, predicting outcomes can be quite challenging,” the source added. “She has remained in contact with leadership from the outset, informing them of her situation, and would have been willing to return to DC for key votes, which they were aware of.”
The source stressed that a special election would have been necessary, and her constituents in Texas’ 12th Congressional district would lack vital representation if Kay Granger, originally elected to the House in 1997, had stepped down in September.
Brandon Granger defended his mother’s choice to relocate into the facility.
“Many residents there are younger than she is. Several of them are still working,” he remarked. “There’s nothing wrong with desiring companionship with peers and enjoying social activities.”
“She simply chose to retire. She’s 81,” he concluded.
Representative Thomas Cole (R-Okla.) assumed the role of chair of the House Appropriations Committee in March after Kay Granger stepped down. Notably, she was also absent during the vote on government funding amid the latest spending conflict.
