The Biden Administration will introduce a new asylum policy

The Biden administration is set to introduce new changes to the asylum system on Thursday, which includes expediting the expulsion of migrants deemed national security or public safety risks, as reported by various media outlets.

This development comes amidst the growing migrant backlog in the U.S., leaving millions uncertain about their status leading up to the 2024 presidential election.

According to a report by Axios in March, over 8 million asylum seekers and migrants will find themselves in legal limbo within the U.S. by September, marking a significant increase over five years.

The new rule would enable officials to deny asylum to migrants within a matter of days, and in some cases, hours of their illegal border crossings, as per a report by Axios.

Immigration remains a contentious issue in campaigns, with many Republicans criticizing Biden’s handling of the border situation, likening migrant arrivals to an “invasion.”

Leading GOP candidate Donald Trump has made border security a central campaign theme ahead of the elections.

Karoline Leavitt, the national press secretary for the Trump campaign, stated, “There is no better way to describe Joe Biden’s open border, which has allowed tens of millions of people to freely enter our country.”

Following reports by NBC News of a new immigration strategy being prepared by Democrats, there is speculation about potential executive actions related to immigration policies.

While it remains uncertain if this plan is connected to recent developments, a Department of Homeland Security official mentioned to NBC News that the White House may utilize presidential powers under Section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act to regulate admissions into the U.S.

Amy Fischer from Amnesty International USA criticized the executive action as a cruel political maneuver targeting asylum seekers before the elections, rather than focusing on creating a more humane immigration system.
