The GOP Primaries Display Democracy in Action

Concerns have been raised about the state of democracy in America amidst the competition between GOP presidential hopefuls former President Donald Trump and former South Carolina Governor and U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley.

Two states have taken steps to prevent Trump from being included on primary ballots, both citing his alleged involvement “in an insurrection.”

Challenges along similar lines have been filed in at least 35 other states.

At the Washington Post, a contributor criticized the “extremists” in the GOP field.

However, the GOP primaries have effectively fulfilled their purpose:

To establish and reflect the will of the voters before the presidential election.

If progressives disagree with the results of a fair democratic process, they should express their dissent civilly rather than questioning the legitimacy of the process or its outcome.

The primary process, like the party system, has evolved significantly since the nation’s founding.

While America did not have political parties at its inception, parties formed soon after, with the goal of preserving the consent of the governed.

The GOP primary and caucus process narrows down the pool of potential presidential nominees by subjecting candidates to a rigorous political marathon.

Republican voters across the nation cast their votes to award delegates to their preferred candidate, ultimately reflecting the choices made by voters throughout the process.

On the other hand, the Democratic Party primary process relies on superdelegates to influence the outcome if the will of the people does not align with the party’s preferences.

These superdelegates, numbering just over 700, have the power to sway the party’s nomination in favor of certain candidates.

The DNC has shown a disregard for the desires of ordinary voters in the past, favoring certain candidates over others.

It is essential that the delegate pool remains free from corruption or biased influences, as emphasized by Alexander Hamilton in Federalist 68.

The GOP has adapted to change while maintaining the necessary political infrastructure to represent the public will.

Our nation was established by individuals who understood the value of true political liberty and the challenges of preserving it.

Participating in political processes is an honor that keeps our nation progressing, and witnessing them in action is truly thrilling.

The 2024 GOP primaries do not undermine democracy – they embody democracy.
