Three Bills Advancing LGBTQ Communities Move Forward in Louisiana

According to Axios, three bills affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer communities have progressed in the Louisiana Legislature.

The bills include HB 122, which prohibits K-12 teachers from discussing LGBTQ+ topics in schools; HB 121, which mandates public school officials to use names and pronouns matching a student’s birth certificate unless a parent gives written consent for a different approach; and HB 608, which requires public institutions to recognize women and girls based on their birth and biological sex for restroom use.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry stated, “I am proud to sign House Bill 608, which protects women’s safety and emphasizes the definition of being a woman. Louisiana will not allow biological men to exploit women’s opportunities.”

HB 121 and HB 122 have been sent to the governor’s desk for approval.

In response, Peyton Rose Michelle, from Louisiana Trans Advocates, criticized the legislation, stating, “Louisiana legislators are unfairly treating LGBTQ+ kids and teachers, leading to discrimination and harassment.”
