On Friday, law enforcement officers responded to reports of gunfire at Young Park in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
According to a statement from the Las Cruces police, responders found several victims with gunshot wounds, who were subsequently transported to hospitals.
“Officers arrived and discovered multiple gunshot victims. Most were sent to local hospitals,” stated the Las Cruces Police Department on their social media, characterizing the violence as a “mass shooting.”
Johana Bencomo, a City Councilor and Mayor Pro Tem of Las Cruces, reported that at least three people have died and an additional 16 were injured.
“Honestly, [nowadays] such a tragedy feels like a nightmare waiting to happen at any moment—yet we always pray and hope it won’t,” Bencomo expressed on Instagram. “This was a heinous act of violence that will leave our city in mourning.”
Witnesses recounted to The New York Times that the shooting took place during a weekly gathering for modified sports car enthusiasts, which had drawn around 200 attendees.
It seems an altercation broke out just prior to the gunfire. Reports indicated that one assailant was armed with what appeared to be an assault weapon.
“They just started shooting and ran around everyone,” said Angel Legaspy, a 20-year-old whose parked vehicle was struck by bullets, describing the scene as bullets flying “everywhere.”
Local media outlets reported that police were still on-site as of Saturday, working to identify the individuals responsible for the shooting. The area around the park was temporarily closed to traffic.
The investigation is being supported by the New Mexico State Police, the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI, and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
