Tim Scott condemns DeSantis: Slavery has no positives

Sen. Tim Scott, a Republican presidential candidate, criticized Ron DeSantis, another GOP candidate, for supporting Florida education standards that require teaching about the benefits of slavery. Scott strongly opposed the notion and emphasized that there is no positive side to slavery, as it was a brutal and devastating practice that involved separating families, mutilating humans, and rape. The Florida standards, backed by DeSantis, state that slaves developed skills that could be beneficial to them. This requirement has faced criticism from both sides of the political spectrum, including Vice President Kamala Harris and Rep. Byron Donalds. Other Black leaders, such as NAACP President Derrick Johnson, condemned Florida’s education laws, viewing them as an attempt to diminish the value of Black lives and ignore the human rights violations of slavery and Jim Crow. DeSantis has defended the curriculum, but Scott suggested that he may have regretted his stance and advised reporters to inquire about his current thoughts on the policy.
