Tim Scott Makes History as the Longest-Serving Black Senator in U.S. History – One America News Network

The 119th Congress kicked off on Friday, marking Senator Tim Scott as the longest-serving Black senator in the history of the United States.

After the resignation of former GOP Senator Jim DeMint, Scott (R-S.C.) was appointed to the Senate in 2012 by then-GOP Governor Nikki Haley.
“I recognize that America is a land rich in opportunities, not oppression. I know this from my own experience,” Scott has stated, recounting his upbringing in a modest household under the care of his mother, whom he greatly admires.
Before Scott, the record for longest-serving Black senator was held by Edward Brooke, a Republican from Massachusetts, who served from 1967 to 1979.
At 59, Scott will chair the Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee this session, making history as the first Black chair of a Senate standing committee.
“My objective is clear: create a system that works for all Americans,” Scott expressed in a statement. “As we set out to rectify the issues left by the previous administration, I am eager to collaborate with President Trump on his agenda, which includes providing every American the tools necessary to realize their version of the American Dream. Together, we will unleash potential, fortify our nation, and restore America’s reputation as a beacon of hope.”
Scott’s political journey began when he decided to run for the Charleston County Council in 1994. In 1995, he became the first Black American elected to office in South Carolina since 1902.
In 2010, he made history again by becoming the first Black Republican from South Carolina to secure a seat in the House since 1897.
Additionally, after an initial bid for the 2024 presidential race, Scott shifted focus to campaigning for President-elect Donald Trump, which significantly raised his profile nationwide.
Since then, he has been a dedicated supporter of the incoming administration, expressing confidence that Trump will address the various challenges facing the nation.
John Thune (R-S.D.), the new Senate Majority Leader, commented on Scott while he was still in the presidential race.
“He is a candidate with a formidable record of legislative achievements. I have collaborated closely with him through one of the most economically significant pieces of legislation in recent history,” Thune remarked. “Scott has been an unwavering advocate for South Carolina and for the citizens of this nation.”
Recently, Scott tied the knot with interior designer Mindy Noce in a ceremony in South Carolina over the weekend.
