The daughter of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz recently shared on TikTok that she has chosen to forgo attending graduate school, expressing concerns over the lack of institutional support for students’ “right to protest.”

“I applied to one school that I was really interested in. While I won’t disclose the name, given the recent developments, I refuse to contribute financially, incur debt, or endorse institutions that fail to uphold support for students and their right to advocate for their communities,” Hope Walz remarked in a post on Sunday.
“Students need protection. Personally, I’m not concerned about my safety at this institution; I am, after all, a privileged white woman. However, I will not place myself in a situation where I am financially supporting institutions that do not stand by their students,” she continued.
This declaration from Hope Walz comes in the wake of President Donald Trump’s actions against protests at college campuses following the emergence of pro-Palestinian encampments last spring.
The statement is also situated within a context where Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained and deported at least 300 foreign students who were involved in pro-Palestinian protests, many of which escalated into violence and disrupted the academic activities of other students.
“We granted you a visa to study and obtain a degree, not to engage in activism that disrupts our university campuses. If you decide to misuse it, we will revoke it,” emphasized Secretary of State Marco Rubio last month.
Columbia University has notably acquiesced to President Trump’s pressure, as he threatened to revoke federal funding over the institution’s purported failure to safeguard students from anti-Semitism.
In response, Columbia has committed to hiring additional campus police officers with arrest authority and tightening its policies surrounding campus protests while enhancing disciplinary measures.
This university was the focal point of some of the more intense pro-Palestinian demonstrations last spring, which resulted in students occupying a building on campus and necessitated a significant police response.
The protests were a reaction to Israel’s military actions in Gaza, which stemmed from the terror attacks by Hamas on October 7th, 2023, that resulted in the deaths of 1,200 Israeli civilians and the abduction of 251 more.
