Toensing and diGenova Tell Newsmax: Trump’s N.Y. Jury Should Have Been Sequestered
Victoria Toensing and Joe diGenova told Newsmax on Monday that Judge Juan Merchan erred in not sequestering the jury for the holiday weekend during the New York criminal trial of former President Donald Trump.
The case involves allegations that Trump falsified business documents to cover a $130,000 payment by his former attorney Michael Cohen to adult film star Stormy Daniels. Closing arguments are expected to begin Tuesday, with Trump pleading not guilty and vehemently denying any wrongdoing.
Toensing, a former deputy assistant attorney general, emphasized the importance of sequestering the jury due to the significance of the trial, calling it “monumental” and expressing concern over jurors discussing the case over the weekend.
DiGenova, a former U.S. attorney in Washington, D.C., criticized Merchan for various errors in the case, alleging that the trial was rigged for a conviction against Trump. He highlighted the judge’s bias towards the prosecution, treatment of defense witnesses, and handling of jury instructions, suggesting a predetermined guilty verdict.
