Trump Administration Strives to Maintain Moderate Tone in RNC Platform

The Trump campaign is actively involved in races for positions on the RNC’s Platform Committee to ensure the party’s platform does not veer too far to the right on issues like abortion and same-sex marriage, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The committee comprises one man and one woman from each state and territory.

It is common for those closely aligned with a president to secure key convention roles, a source told NBC News. “I know there are probably some people upset at us, but these positions are generally set aside for those who have been helpful to the president,” the official said. “That includes this kind of stuff.”

Currently, the party’s 66-page platform outlines its stance on various issues such as marriage, abortion, the Federal Reserve, and police reform.

The party platform is typically revised every four years to coincide with the presidential election, but no changes were made during the 2020 election, marking the first time in over 150 years. This decision, due to challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, drew criticism from conservatives and moderate Republicans.

The committee’s leadership, appointed earlier this month, consists of Trump supporters. Randy Evans, former ambassador to Luxembourg under Trump, serves as the Executive Director; Russ Voight, from Trump’s Office of Management and Budget, is the policy director; and Ed Martin, who leads conservative groups Phyllis Schlafly Eagles and the Eagle Forum Education and Legal Defense Center, was named deputy policy director.

According to NBC News interviews, many individuals support the Trump campaign’s involvement in the platform committee races as he is the presumptive nominee. However, debates are ongoing on issues like abortion and marriage as the party’s convention, scheduled for July in Michigan, approaches.

Some perceive the engagement of Trump allies in the platform committee as unusual. One RNC member described it as “very odd,” expressing concerns about potential changes or control being sought by the campaign.

While it’s believed that the former president will have influence on the platform, there is internal discussion within the party about the direction it should take.
